Milk Bank Depot
Highpoint Health – Sumner with Ascension Saint Thomas is proud to partner with Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee to become the 16th Milk Bank Depot in Tennessee. Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit milk bank dedicated to providing safe, pasteurized donor human milk to the most vulnerable babies. Upon opening its pasteurization facility in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 2021, Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee is the newest member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).
Who We Serve
Pasteurized Human Donor Milk is prioritized for the smallest and most medically fragile babies, for whom research shows the most positive benefits for human milk. Approved donors can bring their milk to our Milk Bank Depot, where we keep it until our freezer is almost to capacity. At that point, our Milk Bank representative transports the milk to the pasteurization facility in Murfreesboro. From there it is delivered to NICUs around the state. Tennessee milk, for Tennessee babies.
Highpoint Health – Sumner is not only a drop off location for donor milk, but the Women’s Services department will now begin to receive milk. Mothers in our hospital have the option to use pasteurized human donor milk to provide supplemental nutrition to their babies. With preterm birth affecting about 1 in every 10 infants in the United States — and Tennessee having one of the highest preterm birth rates — this advancement helps improve outcomes for vulnerable babies.
Becoming a Milk Donor
All milk donors are volunteers who produce milk in excess of their own babies' needs. Prior to approval, all donors must complete a screening interview and donor application, obtain physician's consent, and have a blood test which is covered by Mothers' Milk Bank of Tennessee.
